The underground punk scene in Los Angeles in the late 70’s was still very much untouched and unexposed to the daylight of popular culture. Shows were held in relative secrecy at VFW halls, roller rinks, abandoned warehouses and anywhere that was off the grid to punks seeking refuge from police brutality and outside forces seeking to exploit the scene. This culture of outlawism was the impetus for the massive growth and suburban infiltration of punk rock in the early 80’s. It was a bleak time for punk bands and very few channels were in place to release music, organize live shows, much less tour. It was at this time that the Better Youth Organization, was created.
The Stern brothers, only 19 and 20 years of age at the time, dove head first into organizing what they observed could be a more positive take on punk rock. Their mission was to create something that would enable punks to reclaim the LA music scene and get the kids involved, an ethic of “do it yourself” because no one else was there to do it for you! They called upon what was familiar, their own circle of friends, which quickly spread to take action and mobilize by establishing local and regular punks shows in the area. Their attempts at promoting local shows in the greater Los Angeles area would result in the BYO opening and establishing the legendary Godzilla's nightclub in late 1981, which hosted not only local bands such as the Circle Jerks, Fear, Bad Religion, TSOL and of course their own band, Youth Brigade, but many national acts and bands from overseas such as The Damned. The venue was run by the musicians and fans within the scene. The punks ran the door, security, sound, lights, and worked the bar and restaurant. This “community” ...
